How Smart Lenders Think Before Funding on SoLo Funds

Quick Take

  • The SoLo Score, tip amount, loan purpose, and repayment date are the four primary signals lenders use to evaluate a request before funding.
  • Diversifying across multiple requests rather than concentrating capital in a single loan is a core principle for managing risk on the platform.
  • SoLo Lender Protection may offer credits on eligible missed-payment loans, subject to Terms. It does not eliminate risk.

Good to Know

  • Returns are not guaranteed and the loan amount may be lost. Never lend money you cannot afford to lose.
  • SoLo Lender Protection may issue credits on eligible missed-payment loans. Review Terms for full eligibility details.
  • SoLo does not report to the major credit bureaus. Third-party collectors may have different reporting practices.
  • SoLo uses a bank partner (Member FDIC). Pass-through insurance may apply to wallet funds. It does not cover deployed lending capital. Check the Terms.

Most articles about SoLo are written for borrowers. This one is for lenders. Lending on SoLo is not passive. It is a series of decisions, each one involving real capital and real risk. The members who do it well are not lucky. They are methodical. They look at the same signals every time, they diversify consistently, and they use the tools the platform provides rather than funding on instinct.

This guide is about how to think before you fund.

The Four Signals That Matter

Every loan request on SoLo gives you the same information: a SoLo Score, a tip amount, a loan purpose, and a repayment date. Each of these signals tells you something different about the risk profile of the request.

  1. The SoLo Score tells you about the borrower’s track record. The SoLo Score is an internal trust metric ranging from 0 to 99, built from the borrower’s repayment history and behavior on the platform. A score in the 80 to 99 range indicates a borrower with a strong track record. A score in the 55 to 70 range indicates a newer or less established member. Neither score guarantees repayment, but the difference in track record is real and meaningful.
  2. The loan purpose tells you whether this is a defined, closeable gap. A borrower who explains a clear, specific reason for the request and a realistic path to repayment is presenting a more fundable profile than a vague request with no context. “Covering rent before paycheck on the 15th” is more fundable than no explanation at all.
  3. The repayment date tells you how realistic the borrower is being. A repayment date that aligns with an obvious upcoming payday or income event signals that the borrower has thought through their cash flow.

Why Diversification Is Not Optional

Any single loan on SoLo can miss. A borrower’s circumstances can change between when they post a request and when repayment is due. Even high-score borrowers occasionally miss payments. The way professional lenders on SoLo manage this is through volume and diversification rather than trying to find the single perfect loan.

A portfolio of 20 loans spread across different borrower profiles, tip ranges, and loan sizes performs more predictably than the same capital concentrated in one or two larger bets. When one loan misses in a diversified portfolio, it is an expected outcome built into the model rather than a catastrophic loss. Our full guide on building a lending portfolio on SoLo covers this in detail, including the two core borrower tier strategies.

Understanding SoLo Lender Protection

SoLo Lender Protection (SLP) is a feature that may issue a credit of a portion of your principal on eligible opted-in loans that experience a missed payment. Within 24 hours of a missed payment, borrowers with a SoLo Score of 55 or above may also receive a Missed Payment Offer. If accepted, this may result in an additional credit to the lender. Both features are subject to eligibility criteria in the Terms.

SLP reduces risk but does not eliminate it. Treat it as a safety layer within a larger diversification strategy, not as a reason to take concentrated positions in high-risk requests. Never lend money you cannot afford to lose, regardless of Lender Protection status.

Using the Lending Wizard and SoLo IQ

SoLo provides two tools specifically for lenders that can meaningfully improve your decision quality over time.

The Lending Wizard is accessible via the Lend button at the top left of the marketplace screen. It lets you filter the available request pool by SoLo Score range, loan size, tip level, and repayment date, so you are reviewing requests that match your strategy rather than scrolling the full marketplace manually.

SoLo IQ is the platform’s AI financial tool, built on real transaction data from the SoLo community. For lenders, it can surface patterns in your own portfolio history, identify which borrower profiles have performed best for your specific strategy, and flag patterns associated with higher missed-payment rates. It is a tool for refinement, not a guarantee of outcomes.

A Practical Pre-Funding Checklist

  1. Check the SoLo Score first. Decide in advance what score range fits your current strategy and filter accordingly.
  2. Evaluate the tip relative to the score. A tip that feels too high for the score deserves more scrutiny, not less.
  3. Read the loan purpose. Specificity and clarity are positive signals. Vagueness is worth noting.
  4. Look at the repayment date. Realistic dates aligned with obvious income events are a better signal than maximum-date requests with no apparent reason.
  5. Confirm the amount fits your portfolio position. Do not commit more to any single loan than you are comfortable losing entirely if repayment fails.
  6. Check your total deployed capital. Diversification means spreading across requests, not stacking more capital into a single profile you feel confident about.
